Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Edmonton Triathlon Academy flexible with our schedule?

Yes! You can come as much as YOU want. Our coaches will work with you to choose a training tier and develop a schedule that is consistent with your fitness and performance goals.

Are all swimming abilities welcome?

We are not a learn-to-swim program, with the exception of our Swim, Run & Fun program for 8-12 year olds. It is recommended that athletes be comfortable in the pool and be able to swim 25 metres continuously (or with minimal breaks). Beyond that, our swim coaches will work with all abilities to improve your technique, endurance and speed.

What equipment do I need?

To swim, you need a suit, a swim cap and a pair of goggles.
For the indoor bike season, you can either ride your own bike on an indoor trainer (borrow ours or bring your own), or use a spin bike (supplied) if needed.
For the outdoor bike season you need a bike (preferably road vs. mountain, but it does not need to be fancy).
And to run, all you need is a pair of shoes.

Is triathlon an expensive sport?

Relatively speaking, triathlon can be inexpensive compared to many other sports. We have three price options depending on how many sessions you want to do a week! The number of races you want compete in and whether or not you want to travel is totally up to you.

I want to swim and run but don't like the idea of biking. Do I have to do all three?

No! You pick and choose what sports you would like to take part in! As a club we take part in cross country races, aquathons, duathlons and triathlons.

How is the payment/ fee schedule structured?

We offer seasonal (Indoor/Outdoor) fees which can be paid in a lump sum at the start (with a 5% discount), or a monthly fee for those who want more flexibility.

Can we try it out without committing?

100% We offer no fee trial sessions and if you're still a little unsure, we offer a monthly payment schedule with one-month's notice for cancellation.

Are there volunteer or fundraising requirements?

NO! We do not require parents to work bingos or participate in other fundraising activities. Every two years we have one casino which fullfills all of our fundraising needs. Volunteering at events is encouraged, but optional for each family.

How do I know which tier to choose?

We suggest that that the age and specialization level of the athlete should determine training volume. For younger athletes or those balancing ETA training with other sports, tier 1 is probably enough. For older athletes wanting to specialize in triathlon and compete at the National level and beyond, the training volume and consistency provided by tier 3 is required to achieve these goals. Tier 2 works well for everyone in between. Note that for the indoor season, we recommend that athletes <13 years focus on the swim, run, and brick sessions. The indoor bike sessions on Mondays and Thursdays are geared to athletes 14 and up. Coach Kevin is happy to answer specific training volume questions and help you build the right schedule.
