The athlete is a specialist in their chosen sport (cyclist or Duathlete) or an ETA athlete wanting to follow a lower time commitment program of two sports only and access to ETA coaching.
While athletes are welcome to join the ETA at any time, there are minimum requirements. New athletes must be able to swim freestyle 100m without stopping and must have access to a suitable road bike and be comfortable riding it. For athletes who are not yet at the minimum standard, or for athletes who would like to “try before they buy,” recruitment camps may be offered from time to time.
A first recruitment camp, targeting 10 to 14 year-olds (kids older than 14 yrs can simply join ETA without camp), is recommended for the fall of 2020. 10 to 15 participants would be ideal. To ensure the success of participants, candidates should be able to swim 50m without assistance and should own and ride a bike (mountain or road).
Programming would run Saturdays from 11:30 to 12:30 for the bike/run component, and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 for the swim. Additional swim training could be considered for Friday mornings from 6:00 to 7:00. The focus of a recruitment camp will be basic skill development in a safe, fun environment. Swim training will help participants meet prerequisites to join ETA, and will help prepare them for success in the coached environment. Bike and run training will be in a closed environment – a school field, for example. Low-speed games and activities will teach agility, balance, and coordination. The last day of the camp will include fun competitions – a buddy-bike or similar activity. Retention of 25% of athletes joining the ETA after the recruitment camp would be a great success.
